On September 24, 2007, James J. Duderstadt, University of Michigan President Emeritus and University Professor of Science and Engineering delivered the inaugural Pathways of Excellence lecture.
Duderstadt is a nationally recognized authority on higher education, a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Science, and prolific author.
Duderstadt took a leading role on the national Commission on the Future of Higher Education convened in 2005-06 by Education Secretary Margaret Spellings to examine central issues in American higher education: access, affordability, quality and accountability.
His lecture topic was, "The 21st Century University: Challenges, Responsibilities and Opportunities."
